A Year-End Reflection for Health Coaches: Planning Your Business for 2026

By Sharon Curtain on Behalf of the HCANZA Team

As health coaches, we spend much of our time helping others reflect, adjust, and move forward. As the year comes to a close, it’s worth turning that same lens inward — towards your health coaching business and professional practice.

Pause and reflect with intention and curiosity, without judgement, and consider what needs to change to grow your coaching business with greater clarity, momentum, and direction as you head into 2026.

What’s Working in Your Health Coaching Business — and What Needs Rethinking?

Start by taking a sky-high view of your business as it is today.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s working well that you want to build on?
  • Which clients do you most enjoy working with?
  • What parts of your work feel natural and effective?
  • What are your strengths as a health coach?

Now reflect on:

  • What feels difficult or draining?
  • Where are you inconsistent?
  • Where are you spending time that isn’t delivering much return?

Build on what works, simplify systems that take up unnecessary time, and strengthen the areas where you feel less confident. This kind of reflection is a powerful foundation for sustainable coaching business planning.

Professional Development for Health Coaches: What Do You Want to Learn?

Your credibility and confidence as a health coach grow when your knowledge aligns with the clients you serve.

Consider:

  • Are there health topics you’d like to deepen your knowledge in (e.g. midlife health, metabolic health, stress management, sleep, or chronic disease)?
  • Are there areas where you feel less confident or up to date — for example, using AI or digital tools?
  • Would you like to sharpen your behaviour change skills?
  • Are you interested in running group programs?
  • Are there coaching tools or frameworks you’d like to explore further, such as positive psychology or habit change?

What additional training or evidence-based learning would support your health coach professional development and help you feel more confident in your work?

Being a coach isn’t about being an expert in everything. It’s about having the right knowledge for your niche, so you can guide clients to credible resources, anticipate obstacles, and support meaningful, lasting change.

Coaching Business Planning: Skills That Will Support You in 2026

Running a sustainable health coaching business requires more than great coaching skills alone.

Ask yourself:

  • Would learning more about AI or design tools (e.g. Canva) support content creation, client resources, or administration?
  • Do you need stronger skills in marketing, sales conversations, or pricing?
  • Would better systems reduce your mental load and free up more time?

Upskilling can help you focus on what you do best, while strong systems simplify day-to-day administration and support long-term business sustainability.

Review Your Message: Is It Clear and Aligned?

Your message is how people understand the value of your health coaching.

Take a look at your website, social media, and emails:

  • Is it clear who you help and how you help them?
  • Does your message reflect the work you actually enjoy doing?
  • Are you communicating outcomes, not just services?

Clarity here often leads to more confidence, stronger engagement, and better-fit clients within your health coaching business.

Who Could Help You Improve

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Consider:

  • A mentor, coach, or peer who understands health coaching
  • Past or current clients who can reflect your impact back to you
  • A marketing or branding professional who can help focus your efforts and reach your ideal audience

Sometimes, an outside perspective is the missing piece that brings everything together.

Who Could You Connect With to Build Referrals?

Think relationally and long-term.

  • Which allied health professionals or organisations align with your work?
  • Who already serves your ideal clients and would benefit from understanding what you offer?
  • Which relationships would you like to nurture more intentionally in 2026?

Strong referral pathways grow from trust, shared values, and clear communication.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

Remember, this is a process of growth — you don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Just as we encourage our clients to focus on the areas that will have the greatest impact, the same applies to us as health coaches.

Over the coming month, HCANZA will be sharing a range of resources — including podcasts, books, and free training options — to support your health coaching skills and confidence and help you build a business that truly supports you to thrive.

From all of us at HCANZA, we wish every health coach a fulfilling, confident, and successful 2026.
