Dr Catherine Crofts reviews research published in JAMA Internal Medicine linking, for the first time, the consumption of processed foods and a higher risk of death.

As Dr Catherine explains, although it is a no-brainer, for the first time we have the scientific evidence as to why ANY diet that removes processed foods offers good results. It’s another step in our understanding of the link between ultra-processed food and health.

The cohort study of 44, 551 French adults 45 years or older, found a 10% increase in the proportion of ultra-processed food consumption was statistically significantly associated with a 14% higher risk of all-cause mortality.
